![]() ![]() The British government was seeking for ways to turn the tide in the war. The Battle of the Somme had been fought between 1 July and 1 November, 1916, and Passchendale between July and November, 1917. Millions had been slaughtered in the trenches and neither side seemed to be winning. The Balfour Declaration (BD) needs to be understood in the context of World War Iīy the time the BD was issued on 2 November 1917, Britain and Germany had been at war for over three years. If it were a review, my only criticism of the book would be that, in concentrating so much on the politics behind the Declaration, there is no discussion of the religious beliefs of key players like Lord Balfour and David Lloyd George which made them so open to supporting Zionism. This is an attempt simply to summarise the contents of the book with a number of quotations. The author, Jonathan Schneer, is an American historian who specialises in modern British history and teaches at Georgia Tech’s School of History, Technology, and Society. ![]() The late Tony Judt described this book as ‘the best modern history of the Balfour Declaration,’ and Eugene Rogan of Oxford sees it as ‘the most original exposition of the Balfour Declaration to date.’ It deserves a wide circulation as we live through the centenary of the Balfour Declaration on 2 November, 2017. A fourth chapter traces the role of the Anglican Church in Palestine. Richly illuminated with family photos, the three main chapters trace the ancestral journeys of Damiani-Shanley’s extended family from Scotland and Lebanon to Iraq and then to Palestine. It traces the influence of missionaries, archaeologists, traders and colonialists competing with each other for a share of the Near East as the Ottoman Empire met its demise. Anita Damiani-Shanley’s book will most certainly help perpetuate their heritage and rightful historic claim to Palestine.Īncestral Journeys is however much more than the story of two families, one Arab and the other Scottish joined in marriage. This is why books such as Ancestral Journeys and Western Missions are so vital in recording the memories and eyewitness accounts of Arabs and Palestinians who experienced the arrival of Western colonialists to the Middle East, were co-opted into their wars, witnessed the rise of Zionism and then became refugees in the Palestinian Nakba. “The founding myths of Israel have dictated the conceptual removal of Palestinians before, during and after their physical removal in 1948… The de-Arabisation of Palestine, the erasure of Palestinian history and the elimination of the Palestinian’s collective memory by the Israeli state are no less violent than the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in 1948 and the destruction of historic Palestine.” Ilan Pappe, in his book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, calls this ‘memorocide’ and in The Palestine Nakba, Nur Masalha elaborates, Like other Western colonial-settler experiments, for over 70 years, Zionists have been systematically erasing the culture and history of indigenous Palestinians to justify their forced removal and the theft of their land. A fury within, the 'Seven Against Thebes' stand strong in this ode to the final trilogy of Aeschylus's legendary literature. 'Seven Against Thebes', a perfectly poignant piece which captures the ethereal glory of gloom and techno in a single track. 'Ares' collects and redistributes all preconceived notions of melody and rhythm, taking on a new form with dangerously tantilizing synthetic sounds which tickle and taste the aural pleasures deep within us all. A rollercoaster of unexpected turns, Simon Sizer takes the listener down new, unexplored terrain in the prologue to an epic trilogy. 'Aethra' sets the tone for the EP with a modern, unique approach to track arrangement.
